Q. What does DGAA mean?

A. DGAA stands for "Dumfries and Galloway Arts Association"


Q. What does DGAA do?

A. DGAA works in partnership with the local authority and national arts agencies to progress the region's Arts Strategy by:

  • Focusing on agreed areas (music development, performing arts, art in public, literature, traditional arts, arts in the community), and providing schemes and personnel to advance and support the sector.

  • Producing events and productions that reflect the region or act as a focus.

  • Producing directories and information on artists and related services and resources in sectors it serves.

  • Managing artist's residencies.

  • Supporting and advising regional arts and arts related organisations.



Q. Is DGAA part of D & G Council, The Scottish Arts Council or D & G Arts Festival?

A. No.

DGAA is an independent agency that has service level agreements with it's core funders.

DGAA is a non-profit making company limited by guarantee with charitable status.

DGAA has a board of directors.


Q. Can DGAA provide funding for artists and events??

A. DGAA is not a funding agency but it's specialist staff can advise on the best routes and sources for setting up and funding your project.

DGAA has a Guarantee Against Loss scheme for productions in the region.

DGAA sometimes works in partnership with other organisations contributing funds to specific projects.


Q. How do I find out about arts activities and events in Dumfries and Galloway?

A. This website has an `Events Calendar` which provides details of up and coming events, festivals and performances in the region.

If you require information about arts activities such as writers groups, galleries, tuition, public art or musicians etc. go to our `Artists & Resources` section where you can browse and search for items of interest.

Alternatively, Dumfries & Galloway Council and Dumfries & Galloway Tourist Board jointly maintain a What's On database to advertise local events online. www.dgcommunity.net


Q. Where can I get funding for my arts activity?

A. There are many sources of funds for arts activities.

Local groups may apply to their Area Committee of Dumfries and Galloway Council. Website: www.dumgal.gov.uk

Artists and performers may apply to an appropriate scheme at the Scottish Arts Council. Website: www.scottisharts.org.uk/

Individuals seeking support for short or full-time training opportunities may apply to a range of Trusts and Foundations.

Q. How can I tell people about my event or activity?

A. This website has an Events Calendar which provides details of events in the region. If you would like your event or activity included in this click here

Alternatively,

  • There are many local papers in Dumfries and Galloway. These will accept information in the form of a Press Release or you may insert a paid advertisement.

  • Dumfries & Galloway Council and Dumfries & VisitScotland Dumfries & Galloway jointly maintain a What's On database to advertise local events online. This is a FREE service.

    If you would like to advertise an event, you will find a form in the What's On section of the Council's website www.dgcommunity.net which you can complete on-line or print out and post. For further information contact VisitScotland Dumfries & Galloway 01387 245550


Q. Where can I find information about entertainers for a party, event or fund-raising occasion?

A. You can use the Search facility on this site to identify musicians, children's entertainers, writers and street performers based in the region. You will find links to other sites which may help to provide the information you seek. The majority of artists and performers listed are professional, and you should consider whether you can offer a fee and travelling expenses before you approach the individual.


Q. I'd like to find others who are interested in my artform. Where is there a directory of organisations?

A. The Library Service keeps a database of all regional clubs and organisations. You can access this by looking under `Recreation` on the Dumfries & Galloway Council website www.dgcommunity.net.

Alternatively, you may find relevant contacts by searching our database.


Q. I am a writer. How can I get my work published?

A. There are many ways in which original work is published - in books, newspaper, on websites and in pamphlets. People self-publish or their work is accepted (and paid for) by a reputable publisher. DGAA can help with advice, and you can contact them either by post c/o DGAA, 28 Edinburgh Road, Dumfries, DG1 1JQ or via e-mail on andrew@dgaa.net


Q. I want to organise a ceilidh and I need a band. Can you recommend one?

A. The directory of artists on this site will provide some suggestions. Before approaching a band you may want to think about the occasion (wedding, birthday party, community celebration) and your budget so that you can brief them to meet your needs. Q. How can I get my music recorded??

A. There are a number of recording resources in the region. There is a studio at the Oasis Centre in Dumfries which is run by the Council - contact Paul Chisholm on 01387 260243. For further advice or information contact DGAA on 01387 253383 or e-mail andyh@dgaa.net

Q. Are DGAA's services free??

A. Many of the services DGAA provides for voluntary organisations and artists are free.

DGAA does, however, have a range of merchandise and is able to sell tickets and merchandise for others for a small commission.
