Music in all its styles and genres is a major contributor to the arts in Dumfries and Galloway.
Traditional music and ceilidhs are a regular feature at community events and the region hosts numerous folk and traditional music festivals throughout the year. There is active support for local traditional musicians to perform during the summer months to enhance visitors' experiences.
Contemporary music festivals include The Wickerman Festival in July and Creetown Country and Western weekend in September, with further major popular music events hosted under the Dumfries and Galloway Arts Festival in the spring and GaelForce in the Autumn; venues across the region, including the recently opened CatStrand at New Galloway and Buccleuch Centre in Langholm, have exciting and varied programmes of music.
Much of the region's music making is by the wealth of amateur choral, operatic and orchestral groups and music societies that perform throughout the year and actively promote concerts by visiting artists. Additionally there are Brass, Pipe and Silver bands in the region that also offer opportunities for the enthusiastic player.
Music is an important part of the schools' curriculum in Dumfries and Galloway; there is abundant young talent and interest in all genres of music. Youth music groups include The Stewartry Wind Band and The Youth Jazz Group in Dumfries as well as numerous young pop bands.
